For Set 4, Jump to Lightspeed, Fantasy Flight Games decided to do something that other TCGs do. They introduced a “Collector” oriented product into the mix. This “Carbonite Edition” booster box comes with 12 packs each and a case is 4 booster boxes (not 6 like regular booster boxes).
Aside from the literal numerical difference of cards (where standard booster boxes have 24 packs per box), the quality and rarity of cards in a Carbonite box far and away blows a regular booster box out of the water.
Some quick stats:
Ratio of a showcase is 1 in 2 per Carbonite Booster. Whereas it’s 1 in 2 CASES for regular booster boxes.
Every card in a Carbonite back is a foil, hyperspace or hyperspace foil. Whereas there is only 1 foil in a regular pack with a chance of a hyperspace card.
Going back to the original question of the article, I think the answer is YES, it’s worth getting a Carbonite Booster Box, but like so many things in life I think the best approach is to find the right balance (as in don’t only buy Carbonite Boxes).
My suggestion is buying a little bit of everything. An arrangement such as 1 prerelease kit, 2 regular booster boxes, 1 carbonite booster box, and then purchase singles for any missing cards seems reasonable. You’ll most likely get a place set of Commons / Uncommons, most of the Rares you need, and then a roughly 50% chance to get a showcase which can be added to your collection or otherwise sold to recoup some funds.
Of course, not everyone has access to the same resources, and if you are on a tight budget then don’t do it. You’ll be better served getting standard booster boxes to fill your collection or doing weekly drafts/constructed events at your local game store where prize support includes things like a pack per win.
Ultimately, you have got to make the most responsible choice for your own situation. The good news is that there are so many ways to access this game now! Product is plentiful!
Anyway, that’s it for now! I hope you find this article helpful and until next time, may the Force be with you.
